Community Capacity-Building on Eco-Cultural Tourism

SAVE IFUGAO TERRACES MoVEment believes on the principle of development and responsible tourism. Aside from promoting tourism that ‘conserves the environment and culture, and improves the welfare of the people’, SITMo also espouses that tourism should ‘maximize the benefits to local communities’. This can be achieved by capacitating the people on eco-cultural tourism enterprise operation.

Lodah or Lida Tour (Rice Terraces Restoration and/ or Land Preparation Tour, October and November). Lodah is opening rice terraces or restoring long abandoned terraces. Tour participants will engage in activities that include recovering eroded portions, cleaning the paddy and paddy walls, stonewalling and tilling involving manual labor. This is done through the traditional system of ubbu or bayanihan. Lida on the other hand is tilling the land in preparation for planting.

Tunod Tour (Planting Tour, December, January and February). The tour will give the tourists the opportunity to experience the Ifugao rice terrace culture by actually participating in tunod or planting.

Tagtag Tour (Rice Cropping Tour, March and April). Through this tour, visitors will see the spectacle of tagtag, a traditional ritual to protect the rice crop from rats and other pests. It involves a great number of Ifugao men clad in traditional Ifugao attire marching along the rice terraces while beating wood planks in rhythm. This is also known as dog-al in some areas of Ifugao.

Botok or Pfoto’ Tour (Harvest Tour, June and July).Together with the local community, participants will experience harvesting the Ifugao traditional rice variety using gamolang, a traditional implement, and enjoying the rhythm of Ifugao chants and songs that is a traditional part of the harvest activity. This would culminate in making the bundles of palay, which is the literal meaning of botok/pfoto’, though it also refers to the harvest activity itself.

Bakle Tour (Thanksgiving Festival, August and September). SITMo’s series of organized tours culminates to bakle, a thanksgiving ritual for a bountiful yield conducted after all the rice has been harvested, usually in July to September. It is the time to feed the bulul, the rice god. The villager pound diket, or glutinous rice to be made into rice cake called binakle, amidst the festivities.
