It is bordered on the north by the provinces of Isabela and Qurino, on the west by Nueva Ecija and Nueva Viscaya, on the south by Bulacan and Quezon, and on the east by the Pacific Ocean. Marine Turtles are transboundary creatures, they travel great distances to feed and grow. But because as hatchlings the imprint the magnetic fiel of area they always go back to where they were hatched after 25 to 30 years to copulate and lay their eggs.

How ever communities especially in underdeveloped countries, uninformed of their functions in the environment have hunted them down in the sea or slaughtered them while they lay their eggs in the beach for their shell and skin. While their eggs and meat are collected as food.

NACCI now promotes and support the Pawikan Conservation Center, a community based project of reformed poachers in the protection of the turtles.

Familiarize yourself with jungle survival techniques from US Navy-trained Aeta Training Officers.  BATANES is the smallest province in the Philippine archipelago but probably popular province because of it’s undisturbed and unspoiled beauty of nature preserved by peace loving people.  BATANES is different – wind swept hills and boulder-hemmed shores that lure, challenge and haunt. The people are different – a brave and skillful race of hardy, inscrutable survivors.  The houses is different – stone walls, whitened with lime, and roofed in thatch of grass.

My Life is GOD’s Gift to Me, what I do with it, is my Gift to HIM.

GenSan to Digos to Davao to Talicod Island Sept 18

Day 6 Sept 18 Sat

Left GenSan 7am via Yellow Bus, again the sceneries are great. Digos is equally great like the rest. Got to Davao 10:30am, to a taxi to Sta. Ana Warf  and got on the boat of  Jessa3 (P50) to Talicod Island and another habal habl (P10) to the Beach Resort.  Got a text from Isla Reta Reservation that there is a service picking us up for 1pm, so we waited and transfer to the service boat of the resort  (P70).

We arrive 2:30pm. A bellboy carried my dive bag like a backpack and took us to the resort lobby. The island have a bit of white powderish sand, lots of coral rubbles, shaded shoreline because of the big Talisay tress which is ideal for beach bumming. In front of us is the Samal Island where the sunrise is. Visitors can bring in food, but it is also nice to try the fresh catch for the day. We ate super fresh steam talakitok for late lunch. The island is generator run from 5pm to 6am.Bermuda grass to our cottage. We have our twin room w private bath (P800), other are cottages (P700) w common bath. All the rooms have screen. Mosquitos comes out 4pm to 6pm, that’s why we stayed in the water till it is really dark.  Did snorkel but was told that the corals are better at the coral garden. It is a noisy night, a birthday party with their own music at the right side of the beach, another at the left side of the beach, and the public videoke at the center. Really noisy, but with the moon shine piercing between the leaves and branches of talisay tree while swimming at the powdery side of the beach with new wave background music, I decided to that everything is PERFECT.

Dinner is equally perfect, big chunk of Tuna sugba and my durian pie. He he he he napapapikit sa sarap ng bawat kagad ng durian.

Lake Sebu to Koronadal to GenSan Sept 17

Day 5 Sept 17 Friday

Woke up early for morning prayers and rituals. And discovered that there is NO WATER during my dumping moments. Will definitely check out today (planned to stay 2nights).

Continued my morning beautifully from the sunrise at the lake, fish feeding, breakfast by the lake, super crazy zipline thru the seven waterfalls (the best I ever had super MUST TRY), habal habal road trip around the lake, Lake Sebu tourism, Tiboli Museum, and Cowhide Souvenirs. Had a really grand time. The lake is really majestic like the seven waterfalls.

We went back to Marvel same route, then got on the Yellow bus to General Santos. Checked in our hotel, saw Queen Tuna Park, ate at Ryans Lechon, shopped for fruits and got back to the hotel to rest for the night.

Kabacan, Pikit, Midsayap, Cotabato City, Sultan Kudarat, Koronadal, Surella, Lake Sebu Sept 16

Day 4 Sept 16 Thursday

Woke up by the chirping birds. Went down to walk around, found the grade school, and a small carinderia where they are making patel (Kabacan) or pastel (Cotabato). It is a local delicacy where rice is wrapped around the banana leaves and some chicken or fish toppings on top.

Walked around Kabacan and left 10am via Weena bus to Cotabato City. Want to do this route to enjoy another magnificent views like the day before, which is indeed as beautiful.  Passed by Pikit, Aleosan, Libungan, Midsayap, and Pigcawayan, feasting my eyes on the wonderful sceneries that is full of rich agricultural plantation.

Arrived in Cotabato City after 2 and half hour, then got on a jeep to Awang where Husky bus terminal is. Meet Maricar, ate the patel with her as welcome meal. Got on Husky Aircon Bus to Marbel.

The route from Cotabato City to Sultan Kudarat is really a super disappointment. To my left and right are bare farmland. I wonder how people eat? I wonder how their political leaders sleep? I wonder why do they want so much money, if the community is soooo hungry.

Lake Sebu Tourism was very accommodating in my text inquiries on how to go to the lake. Edna made sure that we make it for the night. She asked me if we wana stay in Artacho (no guest) or Punta Isla (w so many guest). Chose Artacho because we don’t want so many people.

Got off at Marbel and transferred to Yellow bus (P22) going to Suralla. Got 1 kilo of Lansones for P20 and 1kilo of mangoesteen for also P20. We are planing to have it for dinner, but the lanzones did not made it to the Poblacion during the jeep ride (P24) going to Lake Sebu. The ride going up to Lake Sebu was spectacular. Observed that if a passenger is living at the left side of the road, the jeep will stop at the left side of the road, so the passenger don’t have to cross the street, even thou we are parked against the flow of traffic. Very sweet drivers! Very scenic during the redish dusk. The whole lake was great. Very refreshing and serene.

Maricar got her first  habal habal (10) adventure to go to Artacho Resort. Our motorbike is comfortable, because of a good shock absorber.

At the resort we are greeted with badly lighted reception area.  The owners are not excited to have guest even Lake Sebu Tourism office made the reservation for us already. They said everybody went to Holy Mass (ok why do we need to know that). The I asked for the menu so we can order our dinner, and he gave me the menu, and which reminded me that the reception is badly lighted so I cannot read it. No welcome drinks, didn’t even offer a seat, so we seat our selves in the dining area. The reason why they cannot check us in, is because all the staff are really out on church, they don’t know where the keys are. Told them why bring all the keys to church.

We are waiting at the dining area overlooking the lake for 20minutes, when  all the staff arrived. They are very attentive, took our dinner order immediately. Asked me to come over the badly lighted reception area to write in the guest registration. Told them will do that if they already have a well lighted reception area. They showed us our way to our room where the hallways have walls with cobwebs, walls have mess file of soda and beer cases, stairs in uneven wooden steps, room with dusty cabinet, bathroom with out trashbin and cloth lines to hang on. Got our 2 queen beds with own private toilet and bath for P500. Should I still complain???? Oh by the way, they have a new swimming pool refilling with fresh new spring water, which is not part of your accommodation payment.

The dinner at the badly lighted dining area was EXCELLENT!!! Had Nilagpang na Tilapia at Chicharon Tilapia. Thank you to the cook who made our day. The vegetable I thought to be asparagus was a deadly green chilly. Thank you to the badly lighted area. I munch on the killer chilly 3x and got ignited with fire of super spice. Our butler got me some sugar to melt in my mouth so it will neutralize the spice and it worked. Finish enjoying our lovely dinner.

Tourism office said this is a wifi area, but when I tried to get connected it is on limited signal. I don’t know what that is, but I know my laptop is ok, because I got easy connection in South Point. I asked Maricar to check the connection, and all her engineers said all connection is strong. I am beginning to reflect and beginning to think why there are more people in Punta Isla.

Late in the evening Punta Isla videoke is still playing. hmmm maybe we are in a better resort. This noise is disturbing nature, guests from the resort and other resort and local community. Hope Lake Sebu tourism will take note of this. Really noisy.

GenSan to Kornadal to Tacurong to Kabacan Sept 15

DAY 3 Sept 15 Wed

Woke up really early, opened the cable tv to dose again, woke up 7am. Finished the chocolate bread and 1 kilo of mangosteen while watching the am news, will and grace and fraiser again. Check out 9am, when to Ryan’s Lechon house to check out the pork lechon and it is just ok.

Took a tricycle to Gaisano for the van terminal to Polomolok, Got off Sweet Valley to buy some dehydrated fruits for pasalubong. Saw a glazed crickets vendor along the way, crickets like in Cambodia, but this one is sweeter. I am tempted to much on them, but I remember my allergic reaction with swelling mouth. I thought the bugs are chips, I did not realize that I am already swelling. So I just took photos of it.

 Then proceeded to the town.

Mr. Rayman met me warmly, introduce me to their Municipal Admin, Vice Mayor and group of Indigenous Blaan Leaders. The tribal community here said they are running out of weavers because everybody have good education already. I told them that they can include it in their MAPE subject both grade school and high school. Then they also have few abaca plant because of lack of financial resources and land to plant, because Dole Philippines planted pineapples. Dole is leasing the land, hope some money will go to provide conservation of their arts and culture of the  Blaan Tribe.

Then we went to Durian Farm, ate durian ice cream, bought durian cubes, yema, polvoron, durian pie. I smell like durian already he he he he he. FYI fresh durian is very high in cholesterol.

The van to Koronadal is almost fully loaded but was given to get the front seat beside the driver. There are people who need to ride along the way but we cannot accommodate them. I ask the driver why not drive a jeep where he can accommodate as many as he can, save on gas, more income and also put products on the roof. Then he said, nobody wants to ride a jeep.  I went to think, this van culture is not environment friendly.

I got off at Koronadal City to a Yellow bus to Tacurong City where I got on a Rural Bus to Kabacan. The trip pass thru Maguindanao where I saw famous surnames of Mangundadatu’s and Ampatuan’s. Saw a big tarpaulin the massacre also. The rotondas center look so elegant and royal. Saw lots of mosques. Passed by Pres.Quirino, Tulunan, Mlang, and Matalam. The farm lands of rice and bananas are soooo lovely. The houses are really small and simple most are standing on small water. To my right is the grand Mt. Apo, but it is hidden under heavy rain clouds. The road trip is worth taking, I’ve learn so much, and much more if I get to immerse in the community to write my dream book.

Arriving in Kabacan, the town looks happy and busy, took a tricycle to University of South Mindanao, ate my dinner first and check in the university hostel. Greeted by a tree with loud chirping birds. It is another very lovely place as lovely as my host Mrs. A.Salik. A lovely place to rest for the night.

Maitum to Maasim Sarangani to GenSan Sept 14 Tues

DAY 2 Sept 14 Tuesday

Maitum morning is sooo peaceful, cool and serene. Walked to the market to look for local fruits but they are still close. Ate a great breakfast (anchovies,  sunny side up eggs, pineapple, embotido and durian, yes durian, fresh durian for breakfas). Got free ride to Lemlunay where I will see my dream reefballs. Pouring of Divine Providence.

On the way to Lemlunay, I got a chance to take photos of a logging truck full of woods (don’t know if legal or illegal, both ways are bad for environment). Saw also the community of  . . . . . which I intentionally did not take photos of. Then I saw the land where a Coal mine is planned to build, which have a big sign “Community Based Program”  which is heavily gated. Wondering if it is for the community why is it well fenced and barren. Coal Mine is not good for the environment and the community.

My dream dive will come true, seeing the reefballs of  Sarangani. Told Dennis that if I don’t see at least 1 reef ball I will not pay. Lo and behold, I saw a 6storey reef balls, and took a look inside, then saw another one, then another one, then another one then more. Happyness. The strong current ride around the area was also so fun. Saw lots of fish, abundant of soft corals, turtles, hard corals, and surprises.

Joined the Women’s Org for lunch, got to know them more, plans to make more livelihood for their own communities. I thought the plan for more livelihood is because the housewives don’t have anything to do. I am corrected, the extra livelihood is something more to do after the regular farm work and regular home gardening. God bless the husbands of these ladies and the community where they live. Love the dreams of this women, GOD will surely bless them so much.

2nd dive was another adventure, the current is more stronger this time, and we are moving like we are flying fast. It is recommended for advance divers to make sure that no corals will be hit by the speeding divers. He he he. Woohoo!!!

Got a ride from the resort to take me back to GenSan. Found my hotel, it is a one of the oldest in GenSan. Walked around, ate dinner, saw the market, bought half kilo of lanzones for P10 and 1kilo of mangosteen for P 20, saw the Queen Tuna Park, finished the lanzones and back to the hotel and watched Fraiser, Dragon ball and update this travel blog.

Gen San to Maitum Sarangani Sept 13 Mon

DAY 1 Sept 13 Monday, 6am waiting to board on for Gen.San. and reflecting on a travel blog. Texted Ms. Pilar V., Ms. Lily M., and Mr. Barrel on how to get to Van Terminal to Maitum. Tried to connect at the Airport wifi but failed. Maybe I should be starting the blog instead of facebooking.

While listening to FEAST Worship in my mp3, Bro. Arun Gogna saw me at the laptop table of Naia Terminal 2. We had an early brainstorming on fund raising for the South Feast. Very funny Feast Builder, so cool.

7am I boarded PAL Airbus and landed 8:30am. Got on a blue multicab (P50) to Ablog Van Terminal going to Maitum. Ate balbakua for breakfast at the karinderia beside the van terminal, it is like sinigang na bulalong beef skin and meat. Super delicious must try.

Boarded the van going to Maitum (P140). Seated beside the driver of course and discovered that Sarangani is full of very industrious Ilocanos. No wonder the province is very progressive. The province don’t need external investors. The local Ilocanos are hardworking and prudent.

Mr. Arlex, the Tourism Officer warmly met me showed me the museum and the office. Then we went down to Manang Pilar’s Homestay to check in (P650 w dinner and breakfast).  My aircon room is good for 6pax (2queens w 1pullout each bed). Toilet and bath is common.

Manang Pilar ask me what time I want my dinner, I said, I will eat with the family if possible, I like home stays, scheduled to eat with the family by 7pm tonight. Manang Pilar said she will prepare crabs and shrimps.

Arlex volunteer his motorbike to go to New La Union for the river tubbing, I paid for the gas P100. People from New La Union are from La Union of  Luzon. Everywhere I look there are agricultural plants. People here will never go hungry here. We passed by the Tboli Village of Sarangani, where the houses are made of native materials and no nails.

The river tubbing is P 120 guest (P 60 goes to the guide and P60 goes to the Barangay (local leaders, land owner, site maintenance and medicals of the community). Most like subject to change after I post this travel blog. The River tubbing is great, must wear helmet, lifevest and booty, just make sure all your body parts is in the tube. My advise is to get 2 guides per 1 rider, it is much more SAFER and will prevent you to get trapped in the washing machine or get over board. Water will get in your nose during the exciting rapids. Overall evaluation, MUST TRY. I will do it all over again and will do much farther. Will pay extra tip because I will get 2guides.

Then we went to the cocoproducts factory. Here they make copra out of the meat. The cocoshell as buttons and cocohusk as bags, souvenir products and weave nets to prevent soil erosions.

The he showed me the pond where the Maitum name came from. The rocks in the pond is black, maitum means black.

Then we went to the Turtle Sanctuary, it is one on one orientation given by Manong Danny, they have green, olive and leather back. Manong is also growing mangrove seedlings for the guest to plant. He mentioned a crab fattening area, but he did not show it to me.

Then we went to WINDS, (Women In Nation Development for Sarangani ) they make the semi dried and dried fish as livelihood. Their husbands get the fish and the wife process the product. They have very few catch today, because pirates are all over again. The pirates got all the food supplies, engine and killed all the 6 fishermen. Did plan to buy a lot to support the lost of the community, but I still have 11days to carry the semi dried fish around Mindanao. So I bought the remaining few super dried instead.

Then we went to the local market, saw beautiful baskets and the fish area, to check for sharks. Got myself a yellow fin tuna sashimi for ¼ kilo P25 instead. Went home,  prepared the sashimi, chill, shower, blog, eat,  nap a bit.

Dinner time was excellent! Manang Pearl prepared a pork hamonado, seafood sinigang and sizzlin’g crabs, with fruit salad dessert. Eat all you can. Over dinner I learned that there is this very good politician who always give away fruit seedlings in all the LGU and People’s Organization Meeting.  Now the town of Maitum have additional income from the fruits of the tree. We need more leaders like this in the Philippines. Maitum is where Ilocanos love to plant, crops, flower and fruit trees for the market, for local consumption and for give aways. I love it, they are hardworking, prudent and generous. Here if you beg for food, you will be considered “tamad” lazy.

Manang Pearl, who is also in Indigenous People’s Ministry, told us that she is going to Lemlunay next day for the quarterly Women’s Org meeting at South Point where I am scheduled to dive.  Excellent!

 2. Diving while taking photographs requires skill in trim and buoyancy. LEARN AND PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Watch fin placement so that you do not cover the corals with silt, debris or worst, damage the very same corals you had just admired a while ago.

 3. Be aware of safety diving practices. ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS MUST CARRY A SURFACE MARKER BUOY WHILE DIVING.

 4. Be considerate of other photographers. If someone is taking a picture, stay a respectable distance. Wait for the photographer to finish and then approach.

5. Usually, some dive operators will allow a photographer around 2 minutes to stay with a subject. Since this is a contest, we will allow more time for each subject to be taken without ignoring safety of the group and the environment.

6. Police yourselves. Should you see that another photographer about to or is damaging the environment, call his attention or the guide accompanying him, to avoid further damage to the underwater environment.
