MT. PULAG National Park is the highest peak in Luzon and the 2nd highest mountain in the Philippines. You can trek through lush forest, find solitude in the grassland, experience ancient mountain culture, or encounter rare plants and animals, including the world’s largest cloud rat and smallest bamboo. Hiking experience like the Sound of Music grassland or Lord of the Rings forest. Scenario: Hot during the day, freezing frosty during the night and Glorious during the sunrise.

Our Lady Of Manaog Church is also known as the Shrine of the Nuestra Señora de Manaoag. Located in Manaoag, Pangasinan, the church was established by Captain Gaspar de Gamboa in 1720 and was donated to the Dominicans in 1722.

History
Perhaps the most visited religious destination north of Manila, “Manaoag” is coined from the word “taoag” (tawag) or “to call” when centuries ago, a farmer on his way to his farm one daybreak heard the Virgin Mary calling him from the top of the tamarind tree (where the church is right now) instructing him to initiate the construction of the church. These days, thousands of devotees visit the town of Manaoag each day in response to the Virgin Mary’s “tawag” or “call”..

Taal Volcano is a highly active volcano at the heart of a larger protected area established in 1996.  The Taal Volcano Protected Landscape is composed of over 65,000 hectares in 13 towns and 3 cities, including Lipa City, Tanauan City and Tagaytay.

The entire area is a land of mystery and shrouded in myths.  Most of the tourism is concentrated on Tagaytay Ridge and the shoreline of Talisay town.  There are, however, other entry points to the crater as well as other attractions that a visitor would find interesting.

Pusod offers a glimpse of the ancient past of the region, debunking myths told about this mysterious caldera, exploring the archeological and biological mysteries from the viewpoint of scientists themselves all from the gentler side of the lake where the Tagalog culture is still most evident.

Pusod is primarily an environmental education NGO.  No other tour can offer the wealth of information on the lake basin that Pusod can, as we were instrumental in all the 16 consultations undertaken for the management plan of the lake basin.   Our tours also ensure as little economic leakage as possible, ensuring that local businesses are patronized and accredited guides regale you with the lake’s legends and  the culture in the heartland of the Batangueños.   Experts on Taal: a biologist, a geophysicist and an archeologist/journalist will also be guiding you by audio (on an MP3 we will loan you).

Calatagan in Batangas is a marine reserve, protected by the Samahan ng Maliliit na mga Mangingisda sa Calatagan (SAMMACA). About 66.5 percent of the reefs are classified as good corals with Hawksbill turtles known to nest at the Pagapas Bay. Dolphins are usually sighted in the area.

For those who want a noble experience, try mangrove tree planting in Calatagan, Batangas. One can take a look at all 15 species of mangroves as well as sea creatures, a treat for tourists who want to be reconnected with nature. For those who want to take a closer look, bamboo bridges have been put up at the Calatagan Mangrove Forest Conservation Park. You can also get a nice view of the mangroves and the pristine beaches that surround them through the area’s guardhouses. The Banaue Rice Terraces are 2000-year old terraces that were carved into the mountains of Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the indigenous people. The Rice Terraces are commonly referred to by Filipinos as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. It is commonly thought that the terraces were built with minimal equipment, largely by hand. The terraces are located approximately 1500 meters (5000 ft) above sea level and cover 10,360 square kilometers (about 4000 square miles) of mountainside. They are fed by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests above the terraces. It is said that if the steps are put end to end it would encircle half the globe.

ECOTOURISM

A 5 – day workshop which gives principles and skills in ecotourism with emphasis on the community-based approach, including best practices in the Philippines and other countries. A special feature is the eco-historical perspective.

THE IMBAYAH FESTIVAL 2014  

As it has been through he centuries, Imbayah, a noble People’s Feast, is Banaue’s grandest cultural celebration marking the passage of one person and his family from common folk to nobility in the community. Imbayah comes from the word “bayah”, meaning rice wine. “Bumayah” or “ Imbayah” connotes nobility or abundance – an occasion were it is said that wine overflows from heirloom jars and the feast set for mortals and gods.

On the Imbayah’s festive days, the people done their full native regalia; fun games and sports that test strength and prowess are played; the epics are chanted; native songs mingle with the air of merry-making; and at the beating of the ancient gongs, dancing becomes-for the people, soulful communion. Ushering the communal feast are nine consecutive days “nabah”, during which the community gather together in the evenings to dance, sing and listen to stories.

Far more than the display of personal wealth and power, the performance of the Imbayah, bestow upon the clan and community as much honor and blessings reaped by the Bumayah. It is this symbolic acceptance of the community with other families and in valuing one’s customs and traditions that the household of the Ifugao deemed noble.

In these contemporary times, the Imbayah was transformed into a traditional community festival showcasing the colorful, the noble, and the best in Banaue’s cultural heritage. It highlights the continuing revival of the Ifugao culture. Events during this feast include traditional arts and craft presentation, dance and music competitions, ethnic games date back to the time of the forefathers of the Ifugao people. Other sports with the variation of arm, leg and body wrestling are also played.

Imbayah is being held to promote Preservation of the Ifugao Cultural Identity and Heritage. Incidentally, Banaue has been conferred “A WORLD HERITAGE SITE” BY UNESCO in 1995. It also aims to foster exchange between and among the Ifugaos, its lowland brothers and foreign as well as domestic tourists. It projects the true character and spirit of the Ifugao as reflected in his arts, songs, dances, and games and hopefully results in greater appreciation and recognition of an exotic and great people. It also promotes tourism development and draws attention to the socio-economic needs in the area and of the populace.

During the Imbayah celebrations, the village people put on their traditional wear. Bright colored “tapis” (skirt) jewelry and accessories adorn the ladies. The chieftains wear their traditional G-String with their headgear and other paraphernalia. Chewing betel nut is common as a form of socialization especially on big gathering like the Imbayah. Meat and wine is shared during the festivities.

To date, the Imbayah remains the most spectacular festival in Ifugao-drawing the largest number of local and foreign tourists to Banaue for the privilege to re-live the glory of crossing the path to Ifugao nobility.

 We are pleased to invite you and your organization to participate in the forthcoming Makiling Trekathon on 30 April 2011 (Saturday) 6:00 am at the Makiling Botanic Gardens, College of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna.

Makiling Trekathon is a component event of the centennial celebration of the establishment of Mount Makiling Forest Reserve and the 101st foundation anniversary and alumni homecoming of the College of Forestry and Natural Resources, UPLB. The event is also an observance of the International Year of Forests this 2011.

Makiling Trekathon aims to advance information and advocacy campaigns for the conservation of Mount Makiling being a scientific reserve, an important biodiversity conservation area, a critical watershed and airshed, a significant geothermal energy source, and a key ecotourism site.  Through the event we hope to generate funds for the rehabilitation of the Mariang Makiling Trail that was damaged due to heavy rains in the past four years.
